Role: Communication coordinator, communications lead and part of the team that established the ‘Forum of Mayors on Just Transition’ / designed website, created the communication and digital strategy, content and video production
Project co-designed by WWF Greece, Germany, Poland Bulgaria to promote transformative pathways for job creation in coal/lignite-dependent economies in Greece, Bulgaria and Poland, to identify the necessary financial tools for its implementation and to create an active network of various actors (trade unions, local authorities, civil society, universities, etc.), which will contribute to the integration of Just Transition as a key component of national and European policies, thus further establishing social justice as a core European value. Aim: Just Transition concept as an integral part of European climate policy.
Forum of Mayors is a dialogue platform open to mayors in regions affected by the coal phase out. Representatives from 17 municipalities came together for the first time in September 2018 in Kozani (Greece), and then again in September 2019 in Weisswasser (Germany). One outcome of the initiative was the ‘Declaration of Mayors’, initially signed by 53 mayors from the EU and the Western Balkans and handed over to Commissioner Timmermanns in October 2019. Its signatories call for better financial support and a stronger voice for the affected regions in shaping the coal phase-out. The 2020 meeting in Bytom, Poland was organised by the follow-on project ‘Regions Beyond Coal’.
Europe Beyond Coal annual meeting event, 2019, pan-european
Role: Concept note, event organization, digital and engagement plan, social media package, coordination
EBC choose Greece for the annual meeting. During the meeting we organized a field trip and the partners were able to see firsthand the devastating effects of coal mining and create a social media buzz in the area. Each EBC member holded a puzzle piece starting from the landslide– a symbolic action for the inevitable road to the Just Transition. The members had the opportunity to talk to locals and the president of the village, so as to be informed about their personal stories and their future challenges, as well as the disastrous effects of the lignite power plants to both the environment and the health of locals.
During and after the visit/event all EBC partners had been invited to post tweets / Instagram stories using the hashtags that we proposed sharing the new visuals and our group photo, delivering the message for a Just Transition.

Lignite is word's dirtiest fuel and the dominant fuel for electricity production in Greece for decades. Western

Macedonia was the energy heart of Greece and villages considered “privileged” because

of the lignite deposits underneath. But most of them had been sacrificed for coal . People

lost their homes and local communities forced to relocate to erase their history in time. Akrini village: an enormous landslide

cut off a road and forced locals to relocate violently. Akrini village: the ground water was polluted with large amounts of hexavelant chromium. Mavropigi village:The open cast mine that feeds utility PPC’s coal plants began to eat at its edges. Now it's abandoned

“Above the Dust”, 2025
360 documentary, in production
Above the Dust is an emotional 3D 360° documentary that reveals the layered history and reality of the coal-mining villages of northern Greece. It explores the complex mosaic of human behavior, where sweet and bitter memories, hope and destruction, progress and loss are all intricately woven together. Through personal testimonies, historical archives, and immersive audiovisual storytelling, the film creates a lived experience that places the viewer at the heart of the narrative.
The documentary tells the story of the mine, which began as a symbol of development and growth but, over the decades, evolved into a controversial space embodying stories of destruction, resilience, and interdependence. The protagonists of the story are the local communities themselves and the directly involved stakeholders, who engage in dialogue with one another and act as the narrators of their own stories. People with different roles, choices, and values share their anxieties, as well as their need for understanding and reconciliation with those who represent opposing viewpoints. It’s a collaborative story, built by and with its protagonists, and focuses on communities with deep historical roots and rich cultural identities, many of whom are descendants of refugees from Pontus and Asia Minor—villages that have been deeply shaped by decades of extractive activity and have formed the backbone of Greece’s energy production.
